Sustainable Style: Why I’m Obsessed with Pretty Little Swap!

Pretty Little Swap

We all know that intoxicating feeling of buying a new piece of clothing; the crisp texture of fresh fabric can be such a sensory delight. However, my personal focus has long been on the hard truth that our addiction to new clothes comes at an incredible cost to the planet. As someone who has dedicated over a decade to championing sustainable fashion — a journey that has taken me directly to the stage as a featured panel speaker at Poshmark’s PoshFest Miami and my role as a Poshmark Stylist co-hosting a local sustainable style social — I am no stranger to the thrill of a wardrobe refresh. But, we’ve all seen the sobering images: the literal graveyards of fast fashion piling up in the Atacama Desert in Chile.

It is estimated that roughly 39,000 tons of discarded clothing end up in the Atacama every single year, much of it completely unworn. Truth is, we don’t need more clothes; we need a more intentional, systematic way to circulate the ones we already own.

That’s why I was so excited to experience Pretty Little Swap, South Florida Clothing Swap Society founded by June Alanis, a sustainability expert who truly understands the mechanics of this industry. Before bringing her vision to Miami, June successfully hosted clothing swaps in Texas for over 10 years, honing in on the art of creating an ethical fashion community.

June’s keen to note:

“Everything we could ever need has already been made, and so much of it is sitting in closets, thrift stores, or, unfortunately, headed for landfills. Seeing people connect, refresh their wardrobes for free, and leave excited about sustainable living brings me so much joy.”

Finding a Socially-Responsible Community at Pretty Little Swap

If you are looking for a South Florida clothing swap that moves beyond the typical rummage sale aesthetic and delivers a high-end social event, Pretty Little Swap is the place to go. I spent a little over an hour on Wednesday, July 15th meeting like-minded women of all ages who treat sustainability not as a trend, but as a viable option to curb spending or reject traditional forms of “shopping.”

Walking into the event felt warm and inviting. All the women I met exuded welcoming energy and an openness to connect over meaningful conversations. The event was nicely curated, and best of all, it wasn’t just about the exchange of goods; it was about the cultivation of a community that values the life cycle of every garment.

Attending a clothing swap is, in my opinion, the ultimate win-win for a circular wardrobe. You clear out your closet, you refresh your style without the environmental price tag, and you save money.

Wanting to learn more about what motivated June to bring clothing swaps to South Florida, she told me:

“I found myself longing for the kind of community I knew already existed, I just needed to help bring it together! I love third spaces where people can gather, connect, share, and simply enjoy being together, but I felt South Florida was missing that, especially South Miami.”

Looking Ahead: Weekly Clothing Swaps Announced on Instagram @PrettyLittleSwap

If there’s anything I’ll take away from my first experience with Pretty Little Swap, besides the super cute clothing, is a reinforced mindset that conscious consumption is the way to go. And, rest assured, I’ll be busy auditing my closet, pulling out 15 lightly-worn items — and in some cases, pieces that are still brand new with tags — that are ready for their new homes, in anticipation for next week’s event.

If you haven’t attended a clothing swap in South Florida (or your city of residence) yet, consider this your sign to start. It is a powerful, local way to reduce your fashion footprint, meet incredible women in your community, and, most importantly, keep your clothes out of the landfills and place them into other closets where they can be enjoyed.

To join upcoming clothing swaps, follow @PrettyLittleSwap on Instagram and DM June Alanis to let her know you are coming! She’s busy behind the scenes making sure each event is memorable, and shared how “thankful” she is “for all the support” she’s received.
